Aims & Objectives

A research centre for diabetes, Hypertension and obesity has been focused at Samastipur, the densely populated semi-urban district headquarter in Bihar. The population is largely based on agriculture and agro-based industries. The idea to set up a non profit centre was originated from managing diabetes and other illness in our clinic with huge loss to follow up due to the complex interplay of poverty, lack of awareness and education, daily wage loss, misinformation, myths and later landed in the same clinic with life-threatening infections CKD, heart failure or blindness. RCDHO is meant to be a welfare private clinic, one of its own kind and probably the first centre in India, started as early as 06 Feb 2002.

Detect

Detect early onset of diabetes, Hypertension, metabolic syndrome and its complication.

Treat

To treat and to assess the quality of diabetes/HTN obesity with treatment provided. Define timely and necessary referral patterns to appropriate specialist.

Educate

Identify areas where more attention or self management is needed and to properly educate people. To train and educate patients as Diabetes Educator in their respective village.

Awareness

To raise awareness in field. To undertake clinical and epidemiological research.

About Us

The Research Centre for Diabetes, Hypertension and Obesity is situated in Samastipur, a densely populated semiurban district headquarter in North Bihar. Since founded in Feb 2002, it has on its rolls more than 20,000 diabetic patients registered and regularly managed and followed up. RCDHO is meant to be a private welfare clinic, of its own kind in this country which serves resource-limited population-Diabetes & its complication, Hypertension and Obesity. In the last 16 years, it has grown fast and now an extremely popular centre which caters to the need of the poorest of the poor. The centre detects, treats and identify the Diabetic patients, define timely and necessary referral pattern to appropriate specialists and undertakes clinical and epidemiological research activities. It at the same time trains and educate the patients and the caregivers.

Story of RCDHO-MANAGED care in resource limited setup

What We Are

Diabetes is a common disorder spread worldwide. The projected prevalence of diabetes in India by the year 2025 would be 57 million. It is a large and growing health problem in addition to being an expensive disease as diabetes is a disease of complication. Chronic complication causes a tremendous burden in an individual family, the health care system and the country at large. The dilemma in developing countries like India and especially resource-limited North Bihar where type 2/1 DM often occurs in the young and middle-aged individual the burden of communicable diseases remains high. Therefore, there is sometimes a double or triple burden of disease if we take into account the HIV/AIDS epidemic, Tuberculosis, Kalazar, Malaria and other water-borne diseases. The people/country faces a huge problem related to infectuous complication of diabetes such as severe food sepsis, tuberculosis, pneumonia. Diabetes, Hypertension and its complication have become a major health care burden in many low resource communities and developing world. In resource-limited setting, the imbalance between their resources and the rising prevalence means that at primary care level there is a scarcity of diagnostic facilities and inability to provide appropriate care to all patients leading to under diagnosis, frequent long-term complicacy and high mortality per DM/HTN related causes. Although diabetes awareness has increased in most resource limited countries in past couple of years length and misinformation continues to abound. There is a strong interplay between health beliefs, knowledge and key perceptous and health behaviour. Sugar in its most direct form is strongly perceived as the singular cause of DM. Obesity is still strongly perceived as a sign of good living and it confers respect and influence. The focus of government health department or ministries is usually on other diseases such as HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and other communicable diseases. Even the general public feels that diabetes, unlike AIDS, does not kill. In many developing countries, overweight and obesity are still culturally valorized as indicators of wealth.

This endeavor is primarily dedicated to the socially and economically deprived patients unable to receive managed care which as a human being is their birthright.

The menace of Smoke, Alcohol, Tobacco chewing, Myths related to DM.

Non Profit

A purely a non-profit centre where charges from the patients are taken for the maintenance of clinic, is managing care in the resource-limited setup in north bihar.
